Detailed Description

Semiconductor Ceramic Structural Components: The Corrosion-Resistant Insulation Core for Semiconductor Manufacturing

Semiconductor ceramic structural components are specialized parts made from high-purity ceramic materials, processed through precise forming and sintering techniques. These components offer key characteristics such as high insulation, high-temperature resistance, plasma erosion resistance, and low thermal expansion coefficient. They are critical foundation parts for semiconductor core equipment, such as photolithography machines, etching machines, and thin-film deposition devices. These components directly ensure the accuracy and stability of wafer processing in advanced semiconductor fabrication processes, widely applied in high-end scenarios like 3nm and below chip manufacturing and third-generation semiconductor materials production.

Core Material Systems and Performance Adaptation

The material selection for semiconductor ceramic structural components is based on the core principle of "high purity + customized performance." The mainstream material systems are categorized into four types:

  1. High-purity alumina ceramics offer excellent insulation and moderate cost, with impurity levels controlled to the ppm range. These are commonly used as insulating supports and positioning fixtures in semiconductor equipment.

  2. Aluminum nitride ceramics have a thermal conductivity up to 10 times that of alumina, with high insulation and low thermal expansion, making them ideal for chip packaging heat dissipation substrates and photolithography machine worktable cooling components.

  3. Silicon carbide ceramics have high hardness and strong resistance to plasma erosion, able to withstand long-term corrosion from fluorine-based and chlorine-based plasmas, making them the core material for etching machine chamber linings and spray nozzles.

  4. Silicon nitride ceramics feature excellent thermal shock resistance and can withstand rapid temperature changes without cracking, making them suitable for high-temperature annealing furnace components in wafer processing.

In some high-end applications, ceramic matrix composites are used, where fiber reinforcement or particle doping technology helps to overcome the brittleness of single ceramic materials, improving the component's impact resistance.

Precision Manufacturing and Quality Control

The manufacturing of semiconductor ceramic structural components integrates powder engineering and ultra-precision processing technologies. The core processes include powder pre-treatment, forming, sintering, precision machining, and performance testing:

  • Powder Processing: The powder is purified, ball-milled, and classified to ensure uniform particle size distribution and to avoid impurities affecting ceramic density.

  • Forming Process: Depending on the component structure, injection molding is used for complex parts, tape casting for ultra-thin ceramic sheets, and dry pressing for mass production of simple components.

  • Sintering: The ceramic green body is heated above 1600°C using high-temperature, pressureless sintering or hot isostatic pressing to tightly bond the powder particles, achieving a density of over 99.9%.

  • Precision Machining: Diamond tools are used for grinding, and laser micro-machining is employed for micron-level precision control. Dimensional tolerances are stable within ±0.005mm, and surface roughness is ≤0.01μm.

  • Quality Testing: Mechanical properties, thermal conductivity, and corrosion resistance are tested using universal testing machines, laser flash systems, and plasma corrosion testing machines, ensuring compliance with SEMI international semiconductor equipment standards.

Application Scenarios and Technological Trends

In wafer manufacturing, silicon carbide-lined components protect etching machine chambers from plasma erosion, and aluminum nitride heat dissipation substrates assist in efficient thermal management in chip packaging. The alumina insulating supports in photolithography machines ensure precise positioning of optical systems, while silicon nitride carriers provide stable wafer transport in high-temperature processes.

Currently, semiconductor ceramic structural components are evolving toward functional integration and miniaturization. Ceramic-metal brazing technology allows for the integration of insulation and conductivity functions, while MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) and micro-nano processing technologies drive the evolution of ceramic components to micron-level microstructures. Additionally, the development of gallium oxide ceramic components for third-generation semiconductors is accelerating. These components can withstand higher power and temperature, helping the semiconductor industry upgrade to higher performance and energy-efficient solutions.
